Selling a personalised plate in Nebraska
In Nebraska a personalised plate can pass to an unrelated buyer by name. The holder signs a paper naming the person receiving the combination, and the state issues it to that person. What that paper is, what it costs and how it can fail are set out below, with the source.
What the transfer involves
Straightforward — Nebraska has a named transfer, and holds it for you
The seller ticks "I wish to relinquish our specialty plate to the following person(s)" and names you. Nebraska then blocks the combination in the state system until your county treasurer resolves it, so it cannot be taken by anyone else in the meantime.
Before you pay, know this
- You need a Nebraska title in your own name, or to be named on a lease.
- The signed paper form has to physically reach the right county treasurer. There is no central record you can check first.
- You pay the full specialty plate fee, not a prorated one — the state treats it as a new application.
- If the seller let the message lapse for more than a year it has already gone public.
