Type a plate, get a real estimate, and list it free. Owner to owner, with the issuing authority handling the transfer.
Personalized plates are transferable in some US states and a handful of other countries. It is an established market, not a gray area. What differs is the procedure: every authority sets its own, and some do not permit transfer at all. We research each one and publish what we find. Confirm yours with your own authority before you buy or sell.

The transfer happens between you and the other party through your own licensing authority. We are not part of it.

Documents reviewed
We review the registration document you upload before a listing goes live. That is a check, not a guarantee of title.
Only where the authority that issued it allows it, and that is not most places. Of the 25 US states we have reviewed, 10 have a lawful way to pass a plate to a named, unrelated buyer. The other 15 do not: a sale is prohibited, a criminal offence or limited to family, the state releases a surrendered plate to whoever applies first, or, in Delaware, a federal injunction blocks it for now.
Where it can be done, the plate is not simply handed over. The holder releases or assigns the combination through the issuing authority, and the route differs by place:
- Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, Utah, Florida and Tennessee: a form names the person receiving the plate.
- Texas: only numbers that began at a My Plates auction can be transferred.
- California and Arizona: the plate is released as part of a vehicle changing hands.
- United Kingdom; Victoria, Australia; Queensland, Australia; New Zealand; United Arab Emirates: each has its own transfer process.

Great question! The vanity plate market has existed for decades but has been fragmented and hard to access. Plates were traditionally sold through:
- Classified ads and word of mouth
- Specialty brokers charging high commissions
- Auction houses for ultra-premium plates

- Demand: A plate is worth what someone will pay for it, and nothing is guaranteed to appreciate
Some plates have sold for over $100,000. The plate "MM" sold for $24.5 million in the UAE!
Selling a plate to a stranger is legal only where the issuing authority lets a holder pass it to a named buyer. TagsTrader lists plates from these places only:
United States
California, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, Utah, Florida, Tennessee, Arizona
Outside the US
United Kingdom; Victoria, Australia; Queensland, Australia; New Zealand; United Arab Emirates
Not listed: Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, Washington, Colorado, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Delaware. Each has a transfer guide page saying why. Even where a transfer is allowed it can fail, and every listing says what is involved before anyone pays.

Use the "Auto" match mode for the smartest search, or switch to "Exact" for precise matching.
To protect seller privacy and ensure serious inquiries, we use a tiered unlock system:
- Find a plate you're interested in and click "Contact the owner"
- Pay the one-time unlock fee (varies by listing value)
- Send messages and make offers directly to the seller
- Negotiate until you reach an agreement
Once unlocked, you have unlimited messaging with that seller for that listing.
After unlocking messaging, you can make formal offers:
- Make an Offer: Submit your price with an optional message
- Seller Response: They can accept, decline, or counter
- Counter-Offers: Negotiate back and forth until agreement
- Acceptance: When accepted, contact info is revealed to both parties
Your identity remains private until an offer is accepted by the seller.
Our AI analyzes each plate and compares the asking price to its estimated market value:
- Great Deal - Priced 20%+ below estimated value
- Good Deal - Priced 10-20% below estimated value
- Fair Price - Priced within 10% of estimated value
- Above Estimate - Priced 10-30% above estimated value
- Premium Price - Priced 30%+ above estimated value
Use "Sort by Best Deals" to find the most underpriced plates first.
Listing your plate is simple:
- Sign up or log in as a seller
- Click "List Your Plate" from the dashboard
- Upload a clear photo of your plate
- Enter the plate text, country/state, and your asking price
- Add a description, meaning, and keywords to help buyers find it
- Submit for approval
Use our AI-powered pricing suggestion to set a competitive price based on market data.
Every listing is checked before it appears, and a seller can go further:
- Listing check: An AI reads the plate, the meaning and the description, and scores the listing. Clear ones go live at once; borderline ones wait for a person; nonsense is refused.
- Photo check: Where a seller asks to be verified, our AI reads the plate image to confirm it matches
- Document Check: Registration papers a seller supplies are read and matched against the plate, the VIN and the seller’s name. We do not check them against DMV records or judge whether a document is genuine.
- VIN Validation: Optional VIN entry is cross-checked with NHTSA database
- Admin review: A person looks at anything the listing check was unsure about
Most listings go live immediately. Anything held for review is usually answered within 24-48 hours, and you’ll get an email either way. Supplying registration papers is optional, and listings that do carry a “Papers checked” note.
Our AI valuation engine analyzes your plate across 5 categories:
- Clarity (30%): How easily readable and pronounceable
- Semantic Value (25%): Meaning, words, names, or clever interpretations
- Scarcity (20%): Character length and uniqueness
- Demand (15%): Popular themes, professions, or interests
- Jurisdiction (10%): State/country market factors

When buyers make offers, you have full control:
- Accept: Agree to the price and reveal contact info to proceed
- Decline: Reject the offer (buyer can make another)
- Counter: Propose a different price to continue negotiating
Important: Accepting an offer reveals your name, email, and phone number to the buyer. Make sure your profile contact info is up to date.
Sponsored placements boost your listing visibility:
- Sponsored listings appear at the top of search results
- A "Sponsored" badge highlights your listing
- $9.99 for 7 days, $29.99 for 30 days or $69.99 for 90 days, paid once through Stripe
- Nothing renews: when the period ends the listing returns to normal placement

Buyers pay a one-time fee to unlock messaging for each listing. The fee is based on the listing's asking price to ensure serious inquiries:

We take privacy seriously:
- Sellers: Your name, email, and phone are hidden until you accept an offer
- Buyers: Your identity is only revealed when a seller accepts your offer
- Messaging: All communication happens through our secure platform
- No public profiles: Your personal info is never displayed publicly
Once an offer is accepted, both parties receive contact information. We recommend:
- Verify the other party's identity before exchanging payment
- Use secure payment methods (escrow services, PayPal Goods & Services)
- Complete the official plate transfer through your local DMV
- Keep records of all communications and transactions
- Report any suspicious activity to our support team
Note: TagsTrader facilitates connections between buyers and sellers. The actual plate transfer and payment are handled directly between parties according to local DMV regulations.

Our valuation engine provides estimates based on multiple factors, but actual market prices can vary. Each valuation includes:
- Confidence level: High, Medium, or Low based on data quality
- Price range: Low to high estimate, not a single number
- Breakdown: See exactly how each factor contributes
- Drivers & Penalties: Understand what adds or reduces value
Use valuations as a guide, but remember that unique plates can command premium prices from the right buyer.
When you supply registration papers to be verified, our AI automatically checks:
- Plate image OCR: Reads the text from your plate photo
- Registration document: Extracts plate and VIN from documents
- Cross-matching: Compares extracted data with your input
- VIN validation: Checks VIN format and decodes vehicle info
If issues are found, you'll receive an email with specific suggestions for fixing them.
