Selling a personalised plate in California
In California a plate does not move on its own. The documented route runs the plate inside a vehicle transfer: a real vehicle is bought and sold, and the combination goes with it to the vehicle's new owner. What that involves, and every way it can fail, is set out below, with the source.
What the transfer involves

California’s documented route runs the plate release inside a vehicle transfer: the seller puts the combination on a vehicle, sells you that vehicle, and releases the plate to you as its new owner. You can then move the combination onto your own car as a separate step. It is several DMV visits and it is not quick.
Before you pay, know this
- This is not a plate sale. A real vehicle is bought and sold, and you will own a car you did not want.
- You must have a California-registered vehicle in your own name, currently registered and not on Planned Non-Operation. Out-of-state buyers cannot complete this at all.
- California use tax is payable on the vehicle purchase at the DMV counter before the transfer completes.
- Expect unavoidable DMV fees on top of the plate price, and weeks of elapsed time.
- The seller can surrender the combination at any moment with a one-page form, with no notice to you.
- The DMV screens the combination afresh against today’s content rules and can refuse it.
- Costs and tax here are genuinely complicated. Speak to your own tax adviser — we cannot and do not advise on it.
We recommend using an escrow service
Money and paperwork move between you and the other party, in whichever order you agree. An independent escrow service holds the funds until the transfer is actually done.
