Selling a personalised plate in Arizona
In Arizona a plate does not move on its own. The documented route runs the plate inside a vehicle transfer: a real vehicle is bought and sold, and the combination goes with it to the vehicle's new owner. What that involves, and every way it can fail, is set out below, with the source.
What the transfer involves

Arizona’s only named-transfer route fires when the plate holder sells the vehicle the plate is on and relinquishes the plate to that vehicle’s buyer. Without a vehicle sale the combination is surrendered and becomes available to the public.
Before you pay, know this
- A real vehicle must change hands. This is not a plate-only sale.
- You need an Arizona-registered vehicle.
- If the seller simply surrenders the plate instead, ADOT’s own form says the format becomes available for reissue to anyone.
We recommend using an escrow service
Money and paperwork move between you and the other party, in whichever order you agree. An independent escrow service holds the funds until the transfer is actually done.
